But fish swim, in water?? Why would you teach a fish to fly? Well as daft as it may sound, the amazing flying fish (Exocoetidae) are a confirmation that it has benefited them incredibly, as they are able to evade predators that other fish cannot, by applying this ability! So which fish are silly now?
Singing lessons for a sports commentator & business presenter...
The same can be applied to so many things that we automatically assume would not be worth learning or relevant to us, and our founder; Chris Dawes; has been doing exactly that by taking singing lessons despite having no intention of ever singing in public (thank goodness.....). Chris spends every day using his voice; whether commentating, voice over work, hosting/after dinner speaking, presenting, or training others to speak in front of others; and the question was raised about the impact if he damaged anything that impacts on his voice (his wife lives in hope of some silence...). On top of that, the microphone and other recording equipment pick up every little noise when recording voice over work, which means that the automatic and vital function of breathing can be heard clearly and potentially ruin a whole recording.
Therefore, Chris is paying to have singing lessons to help him control his breathing, and look after his voice with exercises, recovery/relaxation techniques (silence will be golden for him as well as us now...), and use his voice to its best ability for anything that he uses it for.

So, just because you may not have to stand up and present to lots of people regularly, it does not mean that presentation skills training or public speaking courses are not relevant to you. Having the confidence and skills to speak up in front of others opens doors that you may not even know exist! After-all, speaking or presenting in public enables you to INFORM people, MOTIVATE people, and WIN OVER/PERSUADE people; so don't think about whether you give enough presentations to justify training, but think:
- DO I EVER HAVE TO INFORM SOMEONE?
- DO I EVER HAVE TO MOTIVATE SOMEONE?
- DO I EVER HAVE TO WIN OVER/PERSUADE SOMEONE?
The majority of us have to do this, whether it is to one or hundreds of people, so don't you owe it to yourself and your staff to make sure that this can be done with the up-most confidence and skill?
